Our history
Rombaut is a Paris-based footwear and accessories label built entirely around a vegan ethos. Founded in 2013 by Belgian designer Mats Rombaut, the brand exists to prove that fashion doesn't need animal products or a heavy environmental footprint to feel luxurious, sculptural, or forward-thinking.
Every piece is made from plant-based materials, recycled fibers, and premium alternative leathers. Components engineered to push the brand's silhouettes into strange, striking new territory. The aesthetic sits somewhere between art and artifact: retrofuturistic forms that feel pulled from another era of tomorrow. Rombaut treats each shoe as more than an object. The designs draw on cultural archetypes and familiar footwear shapes, then twist them into something unexpected, blending optimism, gloom, and a touch of unease.
What began in 2013 as a solo footwear project has grown into a label that speaks to a community of thinkers, artists, and creatives worldwide, all while staying true to its founding goal: reshape the fashion industry from the inside out.
Mats Rombaut was born in Ghent, Belgium in 1987. He is a multi-disciplinary creative currently based in Paris, France. He draws inspiration from different art forms, natural & scientific processes, and especially music. In 2013, his first independent footwear project, ROMBAUT, was founded. Leading by example, his goal is to change the fashion system from within and to make plant-based accessories that have a lower impact on the environment. Mats is Creative Director and Founder of ROMBAUT, Co-Founder of Virón, as well as a Creative Consultant and Sustainability Expert.
